So George Lopez’s new show “Saint George” just premiered a little while ago & already there’s a bunch of jerks on twitter writing the most racist things to George. I’m getting real sick of people immediately trying to shut us down whenever we strive to catch up & then complaining that we’re “dumb & worthless”. The Mexican jokes are never ending. People, George Lopez is Chicano, he was born in Mission Hills in the San Fernando Valley!
I was posed a question by my professor the other day how I felt the people I identify with are represented on television. I identify most with Mexican-Americans(Chicanos/as), but I still have a deep respect for my Mexican roots, as a descendent of the Spanish & Tarascan people. How I feel I’m represented? Pretty much non-existent, to be honest. To other countries looking at our commercials, they must think the U.S. of A. is a black/white nation, these are the typical races shown, even though the “Hispanic” population is larger than the black population. The only time I really see Hispanics is to sell Hispanic-related items, it makes me feel foreign, like we’re still not a part of the American society.
I’m glad George Lopez is doing this show & I really hope it does well & I just ask that Lopez uses Mexican or Chicano/a actors, because we sure need the exposure.
